VANNES
Vannes is a port on the Gulf of Morbihan and is centrally situated for Western France. It is a magical place where sea, land and sky mingle to form changing and exceptional landscapes. It is a rich and varied environment that should be both enhanced and preserved.
Historical and modern, Vannes’ appeal stems as much from its old town walls and mediaeval centre as from its University and forward-looking businesses.
SAINT COLOMBAN
This ancient village, and its granite houses, is situated southwest of Carnac and overlooks the Pô headland.
The inhabitants have long made their living from the land and the sea.
The chapel dates form the late 16th century and is consecrated to the Irish missionary monk Saint Colomban, who came to live in the area around 610 AD. He is the patron saint of simple minds.
The chapel is in the flamboyant gothic style. East of the village lies the Saint Colomban fountain with its two basins. The washing place was where the womenfolk gathered.
On the shore south of the village, two chimneys still stand in the ruins of a forge.
